Snorkeling Nusa Penida — Swim with Manta Rays

Manta ray encounters at Manta Point run at roughly 80% during peak season (April through November). The mantas feed on plankton in the channel between Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, so sightings depend on plankton blooms and water conditions. December to March encounters drop to around 50–60%.

April to November is the prime manta season, with July to October offering the calmest seas and highest encounter rates. Water visibility during this window regularly exceeds 15–20 meters. The wet season (December–March) brings choppier crossings and reduced manta activity.

The speedboat crossing from Sanur takes 30–45 minutes and can be rough, especially during the wet season. If you're prone to motion sickness, take medication 30–60 minutes before departure and sit near the back of the boat. Manta Point is an open-water site where you drift-snorkel above a cleaning station to watch mantas, while Crystal Bay is a sheltered cove with a sandy bottom and vibrant coral reef. Crystal Bay has calmer water and better visibility (often 20m+), making it more relaxed. Most full-day tours visit both spots plus Gamat Bay.

Surface water temperature around Nusa Penida ranges from 26–29°C (79–84°F) year-round. At Manta Point, cold upwellings from deep water can briefly drop temperatures to 22–24°C (72–75°F), which is actually what attracts the plankton that mantas feed on. A thin wetsuit or rash guard is recommended.

Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay are calm enough for confident beginners with life jackets. Manta Point has open-ocean conditions with moderate currents and swells, which can be challenging for first-timers. Guides stay close and life vests are provided, but basic swimming ability is strongly recommended.

Many operators offer GoPro rental for $10–$15 per day, and some premium tours include underwater photography as part of the package. If you bring your own camera, a wrist strap is essential — the current at Manta Point can make it easy to drop gear. Waterproof phone pouches are also sold at Sanur Harbor for around $5.
