Manta Ray Snorkeling Nusa Penida — Swim with Mantas

Manta ray sightings at Manta Point run at roughly 80–95% during peak season (April to November). They're wild animals so encounters can't be guaranteed, but most tours report sightings on the vast majority of trips. Outside peak season, chances drop but mantas are present year-round.

The dry season from April to October offers the calmest seas and highest manta encounter rates. July to September is peak season with the best visibility (15–20 meters). The wet season (December to March) brings rougher seas and reduced visibility, but some operators still run trips on calmer days.

Mantas at Manta Point are accustomed to snorkelers and often swim within 2–5 meters. Your guide will brief you on proper etiquette — no touching, no chasing, and no blocking their path. Mantas are curious and frequently approach snorkelers on their own.

Moderate swimming ability is recommended. Manta Point can have currents, and you'll be in open water (not a shallow reef). Life jackets are provided on all tours. If you're a weak swimmer, consider a private tour where the guide can give you more attention.

Manta Point is on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida — further out but more reliable for sightings. Manta Bay is closer and calmer but less predictable. Most tours visit Manta Point first, then Manta Bay if conditions allow. Some operators visit both in a single trip.

The reef mantas at Nusa Penida typically have wingspans of 3–5 meters (10–16 feet). They're gentle filter feeders — they eat plankton, not fish — and pose zero danger to snorkelers. Seeing one glide beneath you is one of Bali's most memorable experiences.

The crossing from Sanur to Nusa Penida takes 30–45 minutes and can be choppy, especially in the afternoon. Take motion sickness medication 30 minutes before boarding if you're prone to it. Premium yacht tours tend to be smoother than standard fast boats.

Most operators set a minimum age of 5–7 years and require children to be comfortable in open water. Life jackets are provided. For younger children or nervous swimmers, Blue Lagoon near Padangbai is a better first snorkeling experience — then graduate to Manta Point.

Full-day tours typically include 2–3 snorkel spots (Manta Point plus Crystal Bay and/or Gamat Bay), a land tour visiting Kelingking Beach and Angel's Billabong, lunch, all equipment, and round-trip hotel transfers from south Bali. Premium tours add yacht transfers and GoPro footage.

The Premium Yacht (tour 1121187, from $98) offers a private boat, newly built in 2026, with unlimited water and a dedicated crew. Group tours (from $49) use shared fast boats with 15–30 passengers. The yacht is smoother, less crowded at snorkel sites, and includes better onboard amenities.
