How to Prepare for Snorkeling in Bali
Four things to know before your first Bali snorkeling adventure.
Choose the Right Spot
Beginners should start at Blue Lagoon (calm, shallow) or Amed (easy shore entry). Confident swimmers can try Nusa Penida manta rays or Tulamben's shipwreck. Our Best Spots page compares all options by difficulty.
Gear & Sun Protection
Tours provide all equipment — mask, snorkel, fins, life jacket. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone), a rash guard for sun protection, and a waterproof phone case or GoPro for photos.
Safety Basics
Always snorkel with a guide, wear a life jacket if you're not a strong swimmer, and never touch coral or marine life. If you feel panicky, float on your back and signal your guide. Practice in a pool the day before if nervous.
Book Smart
Book tours with free cancellation so you can adjust for weather. Morning departures (6–7 AM) get the calmest water and best visibility. Check recent reviews on the booking page — ratings below 4.0 are a red flag.

Check Availability & BookFAQ — Bali Snorkeling Tips for Beginners
First time snorkeling? Here's everything you need to know before you get in the water.
Yes — many tours provide life jackets and guides who stay with you in the water. Blue Lagoon near Padangbai is the best spot for non-swimmers because the water is shallow and calm. Avoid Manta Point and Tulamben if you're not comfortable in deeper, open water.
Bring swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, a change of dry clothes, and cash for tips. Most tours provide all equipment (mask, snorkel, fins, life jacket), towels, and drinking water. A waterproof phone case or GoPro is great for photos — some tours offer GoPro rental.
No. Every guided tour in Bali provides masks, snorkels, and fins. If you wear glasses, bring your own prescription mask — rental gear rarely fits well over spectacles. A well-fitting mask is the single most important piece of equipment for comfort.
Yes, when you go with a reputable guided tour. All operators provide safety briefings, equipment checks, and guides in the water with you. Stick to guided tours at established sites — they know the currents, entry/exit points, and marine hazards. Avoid snorkeling alone in unfamiliar spots.
Use reef-safe sunscreen without oxybenzone or octinoxate — these chemicals bleach coral. Look for labels that say 'reef-safe' or 'mineral sunscreen' (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide). Apply 30 minutes before entering the water. Rash guards offer better protection than sunscreen alone.
Spit in the lens, rub it around, and rinse briefly with seawater — this is the standard method used by every dive guide. For new masks, scrub the lenses with toothpaste the night before to remove the factory silicone film. Anti-fog spray also works but isn't necessary.
Float on your back, hold onto the guide's buoy or life ring, and breathe slowly. Every tour guide is trained to help nervous snorkelers. Practicing in a hotel pool the day before helps build confidence. Blue Lagoon is the best spot for first-timers because you can stand up in shallow areas.
Early morning (7–10 AM) offers the calmest water, best visibility, and fewest crowds. Most tours depart at 6–7 AM to catch these conditions. Afternoon swells can reduce visibility and make boat crossings rougher, especially to Nusa Penida.
Match the spot to your comfort level. Beginners: Blue Lagoon (calm, shallow). Intermediate: Amed or Menjangan (easy reef access, light current). Confident swimmers: Nusa Penida Manta Point (open water, currents) or Tulamben (shore entry but deeper). Our Best Spots page compares all options.
Tips are not mandatory but appreciated. IDR 50,000–100,000 ($3–$7) per person is a generous tip for a group tour guide. For private tours, 10–15% of the tour cost is standard. Tip in Indonesian Rupiah — most guides prefer cash.
